How a novel team and novel approach led to novel technology

Blue Slate recognized an opportunity within a segment of the orthopedic reconstruction market. Surgeons had few options for treating ailments of the distal extremities and small bone and joints. By developing novel devices that provide surgeons with effective solutions for fixation, fusion, and motion preservation, a company could capitalize on both the patients’ and surgeons’ unmet needs, while developing products that enhance a patient’s quality of life.

Thus Blue Slate established Extremity Medical and assembled an executive management team with proven, innovative business experience and a unique understanding of what it takes to develop a device from concept to commercialization. With the necessary resources in place, the executive team was able to focus on executing their strategic business plan.

The Extremity Medical team designed their company to address the challenging extremity procedures that the competition had chosen not to. Through collaborations between engineers and world-renowned surgeons—whose experiences, research, and ideas would be invaluable—concepts could be developed into products, targeted to satisfy these unmet needs. By leveraging this powerful approach to development, along with Blue Slate’s experience, international network and understanding of the market’s dynamics, Extremity Medical propelled itself onto the international orthopedic scene with a preceding reputation of integrity.

Extremity Medical has quickly become a recognized orthopedic company: they released their first device, the CompressX Compression Screw, in February 2009; are expecting to release two unique products for treating mid-foot and MTP conditions, the TarsX and Hallu-X, by the fourth quarter of 2009; and anticipate receiving CE Marking on two additional products and introducing them into Extremity Medical’s European Operations by the end of 2009.
